How to Add a Kit (Formerly ConvertKit) Email Opt-In to WordPress

This guide will walk you through the simple steps to set up a ConvertKit email opt-in on your WordPress site, particularly those using our themes or Gutenberg-based themes.

Install ConvertKit plugin on WordPress

On your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Plugins > Add New Plugin. In the search bar that appears on top of the plugins page, type “Kit” to find the plugin. Kit is the new name for ConvertKit, so ensure you select the right one.

Once you find the Kit plugin in the search results, click on the “Install Now” button next to it. WordPress will begin downloading and installing the plugin for you. After installation is complete, the “Install Now” button will change to “Activate“. Go ahead and click it to enable the plugin on your site.

Once activated, you should be directed to a setup page. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your WordPress site with your ConvertKit account. In step 2 of 3 (Display an email capture form), you’ll be asked if you want to show the form below all blog posts and pages. Choose “Don’t display” for both options, as you’ll be displaying these forms in specific sections on particular pages and posts.

Click “Finish Setup“.

Create a form

Start by logging into your ConvertKit account. Once you’re on the dashboard, look for “Grow” on the menu and choose “Landing Pages & Forms“.

Click on the “Create New” button.

Select “Form” from the options.

Under “Choose the display format of this form” choose “Inline“.

Select “Clare” as the base template and click “Choose“.

You can use the design tools provided to customize the look of your form and change colors and fonts to match your brand’s style. You can add a custom field like first name by clicking the plus + icon. Then, under Custom field choose “First name“.

Once you’re satisfied with the design and settings, click “Save” to finalize your form.

Configure form settings

To configure form settings, click the “Settings” button. You can adjust the settings of your form, including options like success message, redirect URL, and any automation rules you want to apply after someone subscribes.

Set up lead magnet

To enable subscribers to automatically receive a lead magnet after signing up, go to “Incentive“. Select “Download” and “Choose a file” to upload your file. Or you can choose “URL” instead if you store the file elsewhere.

Embed form on WordPress

Click the “Publish” button, and select “WordPress” to get the embed code. Copy and paste the code into your WordPress page editor where you want the form to appear.
